Just resting and reading

Saturday I did absolutely. Zilch, zero, nada. Friday afternoon, before my daughter’s piano lesson. I dashed into the bookstore to pick-up a Torey L. Hayden book. It was the last of her non-fiction books on my to-buy list.
Daughter tickled the ivories. I began reading.
Half an hour later, I reluctantly put down my book and drove her to church to practice for Sunday’s offertory with Linda, who promised to bring her home.
I sped home and plunged into bed with my books. I only left my nest of blankets to fix a simple supper and put clothes through the wash machine and dryer.
Hubby, busy as an elf, sanded his latest building project. When the piano player finally came home, we sat down to supper – my book close at hand.
After supper, I dropped onto the couch. Read a couple chapters and fell asleep. Woke at 9 p.m. tried watching TV and switched it off. It was tedious, predictable and annoying. the rest of the family was in bed.
I picked up my book and read the rest of it. At half past midnight I lad the book down with a happy sigh. Nothing like a good book with a realistic, but happy ending. I went down the hall to the bedroom, slid into bed and slept contentedly.
The next morning, I woke up enough to shove my daughter out the door at 9:30 to clean house with a friend. He father was already busy slapping varnish on the smoothly sanded wood.
I had the house to myself. I grabbed the James Herriot book I had started before the holiday rush and read until I fell asleep
I woke up from my morning nap, shifted a few clothes from the wash machine to dryer, folder others and began cooking beef for vegetable soup.
My feet chilled from walking barefoot on vinyl floors. I warmed them in a tub of hot water. I read more tales about the highland vet as my cold, cold toes thawed out in hot, hot water. Only to have them child again when I went to pick up my daughter and her friend from their Saturday morning job.
They wanted to shop. I wanted to read. I gave them a time limit, picked up the book ad read until they returned right on time.
The friend came to visit with my daughter while I read. They chatted and watched tedious Saturday afternoon TV. Absolutely no competition for a good book. Especially a good book and another hot bath. I crawled out of the hot water into bed and took another nap.
At 7 p.m. I tried to watch a couple of my favorite shows. Halfway through a new episode, I realized I wasn’t listening. I already knew everything that was going to happen in the next half hour. I turned it off and called all my grown children long distance. They were all out ofr the night.
I called it a day and went to sleep.
Monday night I called again.
“You don’t sound as tired as you have lately,” Alexis noted.
“I’m not. All I did Saturday was sleep, read and eat. That’s the first chance I’ve had to relax since the holidays, anniversary and science fair rush. It was great.I should do it more often.”
